Choir

The Help for Heroes Choir has been instrumental in the recovery journey of many in the Armed Forces Community.

The Choir gives people the chance to make new friends, sing with others from a military background, and be trained by a professional musical director. It’s also a great way to build confidence.

There are proven physical and mental health benefits to singing in a choir. Members have talked about it being their ‘lifeline’.

The group rehearses online and in person. We cater for people of all abilities and confidence levels. You could get involved in as little or as much as you like.

For those who want to, the Choir often takes part in concerts. Highlights include singing at a packed Royal Albert Hall in 2018 for the Great War Assembly. Members have also sung alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at cathedrals, and recorded tracks at the iconic Abbey Road studios with Jon Bon Jovi.

Members of the group also run spin off activity sessions, such as ukulele classes, swimming, kayaking, knitting, and woodland warrior outdoor events.

You don’t need to be an experienced singer and there is no audition. The Choir is about your personal recovery journey.

Singing with Jon Bon Jovi in Abbey Road Studios

In February 2020, Choir leader Caroline got a message she won’t forget.

“It was from Jon Bon Jovi’s people and it had come via Prince Harry. Jon Bon Jovi had written a song for a US documentary about veterans with PTSD who had rescue dogs. He wanted us to sing with him.

“So members of the Help for Heroes Choir sang with Jon Bon Jovi at Abbey Road studios.

“He was just delightful all day. It was amazing. He was so humble. He came up to us and just said ‘Hi, I’m Jon’. He remembered everyone’s names all day. It was just an incredible experience.

“At one point during the day people were flagging a bit. So he said ‘right, let’s get the energy back’ and we all sang Living on a Prayer and Beatles songs with him acapella.”

The Choir has literally been my lifeline. Singing in the Choir makes me relax and makes me forget about my aches and pains..."
